This is exciting! In May & June 2017, my niece Claire and I will be traveling with
She Has A Name.
During our mission trip we will primarily be working with the young women sponsored by She Has A Name (SHAN) in Nairobi, Kenya. SHAN is a non-profit ministry designed to identify and rescue child prostitutes in the slums of Nairobi. They have sponsored several girls providing them educational, spiritual, and networking opportunities. One of the girls is getting ready to go to college; so a big priority on this trip is helping her be ready for that transition. With the other girls we will be helping tutor and providing other assistance as needed. Another piece She Has A Name wants to develop this summer is training the mentors they currently have in Nairobi as official tutors. This will provide more direct and on-going support for the girls’ success. We are so excited to be able to help these women continue to succeed in their education. Education has been so important in both of our lives, but is even more important for these ladies. Having an education for them means being able to have choices and earn their own income – without having to sell their bodies in prostitution.
One of my bucket list things has been to go on a medical mission. Although technically not a medical mission, this is about global and overall health and well-being of these ladies. I have been an educator for a long time. An important piece of this for me has always been to empower students and challenge their thinking. I believe the experiences of this trip will challenge my thinking and change me forever – providing a new, wider lens to view the world, its people and its geography.
I am also excited to be sharing this experience with my niece, Claire. We’ve had many adventures together already, but I think this will be our most significant one. Here’s Claire to share her story:
I’m a freshman at CU Boulder studying mechanical engineering. One of my goals after graduation is to work as an engineer in developing communities across the world, using my privileges to help others. This mission trip aligns perfectly with that idea—we will be able to support these girls in their education, something that will hopefully prove invaluable in their futures. I know this trip will be a huge learning experience for me as well. I think everything I see, learn, and do could be life changing. I can’t wait to embark on this journey!
If you would be willing to help support our and She Has A Name’s mission work this summer, please donate today. We need to raise approximately $3000 each, so anything will help! If we raise more than needed to pay for our expenses, it will go to the general operations of SHAN which supports their mission of rescuing and ministering to these girls.
